Safety should always be the priority in any water damage restoration. One of the first things we do when we arrive at a water damaged property is consider the water’s class and category.

Water Category and Class

According to the IICRC, water has three different categories determined by the level of contamination.

  • Category 1 Water is Clean. Cat 1 is considered safe to touch and does not pose a threat. However, even clean water becomes dirty if it's allowed to sit over time, so water removal services are needed quickly.
  • Category 2 Water is Gray. This water poses a risk and should not be touched.
  • Category 3 Water is Black. This water is grossly contaminated. An example of Black Water is sewage and rising flood waters. If you have a Category 3 Water Damage, leave the area.
